Should Bridal Party Photos Be Taken Before the Ceremony?

Most of the time, yes.

Even if a couple chooses not to do a first look, I usually try to photograph as much as possible before the ceremony.

That often means capturing the groom with his groomsmen and the bride with her bridesmaids separately earlier in the day. Doing this helps reduce the amount of time needed for photos after the ceremony.

When the ceremony ends, the only bridal party photos we typically need are the full group together.

This approach keeps the timeline efficient and allows everyone—including the bridal party—to enjoy more of cocktail hour rather than spending a long time taking photos.

There are some situations where photos may happen afterward, such as when a ceremony and reception are at different locations with extra time built into the schedule. But even then, getting some portraits done beforehand can still make the rest of the day run more smoothly.

The goal is always the same: capture great photos while leaving as much time as possible for you to enjoy the celebration.
