Is Golden Hour Actually A Must?

Golden hour is one of those things couples hear about all the time when it comes to wedding and engagement photos.

So is it actually a must?

Not necessarily.

Golden hour can absolutely be beautiful, and if we can step out for even just 10 to 15 minutes without interrupting too much of the reception, it is often worth it. The light can create a really soft, unique look that adds something special to your gallery.

But the reality is that golden hour is not completely in anyone’s control.

Cloud cover, weather, and the way the light actually looks that day all play a role. Some evenings are dramatic and glowing, while others are overcast or much more subtle. And sometimes the weather does something entirely unexpected.

The good news is that amazing portraits are possible no matter what.

I’ve photographed weddings in all kinds of lighting situations, including rain, and still created portraits that looked incredible. That’s why I never want couples to feel like golden hour is something they need to stress about.

For weddings, it’s more of a bonus than a requirement.

For engagement sessions, though, there’s usually more flexibility. Since you have more control over the timing, I often recommend scheduling those sessions about an hour and a half to two hours before sunset for the most flattering light.

Golden hour is beautiful when it works out, but it’s not the only way to get amazing photos.
