The Secret to Stress-Free Wedding Family Portraits
One part of the wedding day couples often worry about is family photos—
how long they take, how they flow, and how to keep them from feeling stressful.
For most weddings, family portraits fit naturally into the final 30 minutes before guests begin arriving, and I intentionally finish them about 30 minutes before the ceremony so your guests never see you before that walk down the aisle.
Placing family photos here also gives a little grace to the natural stragglers — and every family has one. Starting with a clear window helps everything stay calm and on time.
This is one of the only moments where a small bit of preparation can make a big difference. I never like to give couples homework, but creating a simple list of the family groupings you care about most helps the entire process move quickly and smoothly. Your families usually appreciate that efficiency even more.
If it is helpful, you can also designate someone from each side of the family to help point people out and gather the next group. That keeps you relaxed while we handle the flow.
From there, I keep everything simple. I place the couple in one beautiful spot and guide family members in and out around you so we are not constantly moving locations.
We begin with the largest groupings, allowing anyone we no longer need to head off and enjoy cocktail hour, and then gradually work down to the smallest, most meaningful combinations, like individual photos with just the bride and someone special, or just the groom and someone important in his life.
And of course, if there are any complicated family dynamics, you can always let me know quietly ahead of time. My role is simply to guide this part of the day with care, efficiency, and as little stress as possible.
These photographs ultimately become part of your family history, and they deserve to feel calm while we create them.
